Molly spread the crayon-drawn map across the card table, tracing the route with the intensity of a general planning D-Day. Bill stood by the window, clutching a juice box like a grenade. She wore a black ski mask even though it was July, and Bill was eating a sandwich made entirely of mayonnaise. Outside, the Henderson residence glowed with the promise of gift wrap and sugar, a beacon of opportunity in the suburban dark. The house sat at the end of a cul-de-sac, a fortress of beige siding and parental anxiety. "We go in through the doggy door," Molly whispered, tapping the diagram. "The Labrador is Mr. Wiggles. All bark, no bite." "I'm allergic to Labs," Bill said, rubbing his nose. "Also, thirty kids on the RSVP. Thirty witnesses, Molly." "They're five," Molly said, adjusting her tactical turtleneck. "They believe in the tooth fairy. We could walk in as the tooth fairy." "We're stealing presents, not leaving them under pillows." "Same energy, Bill. Same energy." Molly leaned back, arms crossed. The candlelight flickered across her face, casting dramatic shadows that made her look like a criminal mastermind plotting world domination, or at least the theft of a bicycle. Bill scratched his chin. "The cake is at four. We hit at 3:45, grab the loot, exit via the bounce house. Nobody catches us." "It's a rented bouncy house from Party City," Molly corrected, pulling out a rusty grappling hook from her fanny pack. "It smells like feet." "Exactly. Nobody suspects a castle." Bill pointed at the map. "I practiced on the fire escape," Molly said. "We scale the fence, disable the baby monitor, slip through the kitchen. The presents will be piled by the TV like treasure." "What if the parents are armed?" Bill asked. "Then we pretend to be magicians." Molly tossed him a bag of rubber snakes that rattled ominously. "Distraction protocol. Rabbit out of the hat, smoke bomb from the dry ice. This is the score of the century, Bill. LEGO sets and Barbies. Paw Patrol. Our retirement fund." Bill stared at the crayon map, then at his juice box, his expression growing wistful. "My nephew has that Paw Patrol set. The transforming tower is motorized." "See? High stakes." Molly patted his shoulder. "But Molly, what about the piñata?" Bill asked. "We leave the candy. We're professionals, Bill. Professionals don't eat the evidence." "The good candy. The chocolate with nuts." "Bill." Molly's voice was steel wrapped in velvet. "If we're risking felony charges for a kid's party, we should sample the chocolate. Quality control, Molly." Molly sighed, rubbing her temples until they throbbed. She looked at her partner, this ridiculous man in a stained hoodie who smelled faintly of crayons and poor decisions, and felt a strange, misplaced affection for his idiocy. "Fine. One fun-size Snickers. But we move fast. The piñata drops at 4:15. I want out before the sugar crash." "Deal." Bill grinned, tearing open the juice box. "To retirement." "To LEGO." Molly raised her juice box, the purple liquid sloshing dangerously near the plastic rim. "To the Henderson kid's college fund," Bill added, his voice cracking with emotion, and they both laughed as the suburban silence swallowed their ridiculous criminal dreams.
