You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.
User/Human

A character is alone in a strange, isolated place at night. They came here for a reason, but something feels off from the moment they arrive. The wrongness builds slowly — sounds that shouldn't be there, things that move at the edge of vision, a growing certainty that they are not alone. Build tension through restraint, not through gore. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for the character and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The bus had dropped her at the Sheen Gate a little after eleven, and she had walked the rest of the way with her hands jammed in the pockets of her coat. Richmond Park at night was not a place Rory had ever cared for. Even with the lamps along the tarmac, the dark under the bracken had a depth to it, like water. She followed the path until the lamps gave out, then followed the faint pale line of the gravel until that too gave out, and after that she followed her own memory of the directions Isolde had scrawled on the back of a takeaway menu. *Past the second bench, where the holly thickens. Keep the oaks on your left. You'll know the stones when you see them.* She had almost laughed at that when she first read it. She didn't feel like laughing now. The holly thickened. The oaks rose on her left, enormous and crooked, their trunks split and silvered by age. Between them, through a gap in the undergrowth, she saw the first of the standing stones: a slab of grey rock leaning at a sharp angle, moss furred across its face. Then another, and another, a loose ring of them half-swallowed by the dark. Rory stopped at the edge of the ring and took out her phone. Three bars, then one, then none. She turned the screen toward the light of the moon and watched the clock. 11:52. She tapped it again. 11:52. She waited, counted to thirty, and the minutes did not move. "Right," she said quietly. Her voice came back to her flat, as if the trees had taken the edges off it. "That's fine. Phones do that." She put it away and stepped between two stones. The clearing opened in front of her, and for a moment she simply stood there, because it was wrong in a way she could not immediately name. The grass was thick and damp. Wildflowers grew through it in clusters, foxglove and campion and a pale blue star-shaped bloom she didn't know, all of them open and bright in the moonlight. It was the second week of November. Frost should have been silvering the ground. Instead the flowers breathed a faint sweet scent into the cold air, and the cold air did not seem to touch them. Something warm pressed against her breastbone. She drew a breath and reached under her collar. The Heartstone pendant lay against her skin on its thin silver chain, and it was warm, not with the warmth of her body but with something steadier, a slow faint pulse, like a heartbeat heard through a wall. The crimson stone glowed faintly from within, enough to show the grain of the metal around it. *It only does that near a portal*, she thought. *Near a Hel portal.* She had told herself, on the bus, that the word was just a word. Something from Isolde's notebooks. Something to be filed away. Rory kept her hand over the pendant and made herself walk to the centre of the clearing. The grass whispered under her boots. Somewhere high in the oaks a bird began to sing, three clear notes, then a pause, then three more. It was the wrong time of night for birds. It was the wrong time of year for that song. She stopped and listened. Her own footsteps had stopped. But the grass went on whispering for a second after she had gone still, a soft drag, like someone else stepping through it a half-beat behind her. Then that too was gone. "Isolde?" she said. Nothing answered. The bird stopped singing. She turned slowly in a full circle. The ring of stones stood where she had left it, but she was sure, in the way one is sure of a dream after waking, that there had been eight of them when she came in and that now she could only count seven. She counted again. Seven. Then eight. Then, very briefly, nine, a narrow grey shape at the far edge of the trees, and when she looked directly at it there was only the oak and the holly and the dark. Movement caught the corner of her eye, to the left, between the trunks. Low and quick, a pale shape there and then not. She did not turn toward it. She had learned, in a bad flat in Cardiff and in a worse year after, that turning toward a thing sometimes gave it permission. She kept her gaze on the middle distance and let her peripheral vision carry the rest. Something was moving through the bracken along the perimeter, unhurried, keeping pace with her as she shifted. It did not come nearer. It did not need to. The pendant pulsed again, harder now. The warmth spread beneath her ribs like a second heartbeat. Rory swallowed. Her left wrist ached, the old crescent scar throbbing the way it did in cold weather, and she pressed her thumb against it until the ache steadied into something she could think through. *You came for answers*, she reminded herself. *Isolde said the grove would show you. Isolde said you'd know when it was time.* But Isolde had not said anything about the silence. The silence was total now. No wind, no traffic from the distant road, no rustle of small animals. Only the faint, patient sound of something breathing, somewhere just outside the ring, and the realisation that it was not her own breath, and that it had been matching hers for some time. She took one step toward the stones, then another, and the grass behind her sighed as if something had just knelt in it. Rory did not look back. She kept walking, and the flowers opened wider as she passed, and the pendant burned against her skin like a warning she had finally decided to believe.
