Molly unfolded the crumpled invitation across their wobbly kitchen table. "Saturday at noon, little Timmy turns seven with cake galore." Bill squinted at the glitter dinosaurs marching around the edges. "You want us to rob a seven year old child?" Molly grinned and tapped the address with one chipped fingernail. "Not Timmy exactly, just every beautifully wrapped present he gets." Bill scratched his beard while imagining balloons, clowns, and chaos. "That sounds worse somehow, especially with professional clowns watching us." Molly produced two party hats from her enormous canvas bag. "These magnificent disguises will make us completely invisible to everyone." Bill held one hat beside his scarred, unshaven adult face. "I am six feet tall with a very suspicious mustache." Molly ignored him and drew a map on a napkin. "We enter through the garden gate during musical chairs madness." Bill leaned closer, knocking over a mug of cold coffee. "Then what happens when twenty children demand cake from us?" Molly pointed triumphantly at a jelly stain representing the patio. "You distract them with balloon animals shaped like heroic sausages." Bill groaned and buried his face in both large hands. "My balloon animals always burst and frighten nearby adults instantly." Molly rummaged deeper and produced sunglasses, streamers, and one kazoo. "Perfect, because bursting balloons create exactly the diversion we need." Bill picked up the kazoo with deep and immediate regret. "Please tell me the kazoo is not our emergency signal." Molly nodded solemnly and wrote kazoo beside a large star. "One blast means run, two blasts mean hide behind cake." Bill studied the napkin map and slowly shook his head. "Three blasts presumably mean surrender to the birthday boy immediately?" Molly drew a red circle around the imaginary present table. "While everyone panics, I wheel the presents out this way." Bill followed her finger toward a drawing of a fence. "That route passes directly through Timmy's grandmother and her handbag." Molly frowned and added a zigzag around the formidable grandmother. "Grandmothers love me because I compliment their cardigans with sincerity." Bill raised one eyebrow higher than seemed physically possible today. "Last week one chased us with a frozen baguette twice." Molly folded her arms and adopted her most innocent expression. "That baguette incident was technically your fault for juggling melons." Bill opened his mouth, paused, then reluctantly nodded in agreement. "Fair enough, but children notice strangers stealing their treasure quickly." Molly pulled out a glittering cape and a magic wand. "Hence Brenda the Magnificent, children's entertainer, arrives with endless wonder." Bill stared at the cape glittering under the kitchen light. "Who exactly is Brenda, and why is she suspiciously you?" Molly twirled once, scattering glitter across the floor and table. "Brenda distracts everyone while you load presents into the van." Bill glanced toward their ancient, crookedly parked van through window. "Our van has balloons painted on it and no brakes." Molly smiled, tucked everything away, and offered Bill one hand. "Then we park downhill, celebrate later, and become birthday legends."
