The rain hammered the van roof all morning without stopping once. "We are really stealing presents from a children's birthday party today?" Molly whispered from the passenger seat. Bill tightened his gloves and studied the bright house across the street. "Not stealing, Molly, just permanently borrowing joy from extremely spoiled children." he said proudly. A clown unloaded balloons while parents carried cakes, chairs, platters, and folding tables inside. "That clown has enormous shoes and suspiciously professional situational awareness, Bill." Molly said. "Relax, professionals recognize professionals, and I once performed magic at prison." Bill replied. She checked their list, two empty sacks, three smoke bombs, gloves, rope, snacks, and one regrettable accordion. "Why exactly did you bring an accordion into a stealth operation?" she asked. "Every great escape needs dramatic music, preferably played badly and loudly." He grinned. Inside the house, children screamed happily around a chocolate fountain and a towering inflatable dinosaur. "Plan again, slowly, because your last plan involved rooftop trampoline access." Molly demanded. "First, we enter dressed as assistant clowns carrying a huge cake." Bill explained. He pointed toward the fake cake, which concealed wheels, compartments, lights, batteries, and an uncomfortable hiding space. "I refuse to hide inside frosting again after the wedding incident." she said. "You looked beautiful emerging from that cake, despite the screaming guests." he said. Molly adjusted her red nose and watched a magician lock the garden gate behind him. "Fine, you hide inside, I push, and nobody improvises anything whatsoever." Molly decided. "Agreed, although improvisation is where my genius truly likes to dance." Bill said. The party started at noon, and the presents were stacked beside the fireplace beneath glittering banners. "We grab presents only, understood? No cake, no piƱata, no dinosaur." she warned. "What if the dinosaur is filled with candy and destiny, Molly?" he asked. She handed him earpieces, radios, spare noses, balloon animals, confetti, and a map drawn in crayon. "The map says presents here, exit there, and Bill no juggling." Molly said. "Juggling distracts children, parents, goldfish, and occasionally local law enforcement officers." he argued. Across the street, a tiny guard dog wearing a birthday hat began patrolling the front lawn. "That dog has seen things, Bill, terrible things involving stolen sausages." she murmured. "Dogs respect confidence, squeaky shoes, and a commanding honk of authority." Bill honked his nose twice. The dog barked, children cheered, and somebody inside dropped an entire tray of cupcakes. "New rule, no honking until after we escape this ridiculous party." Molly snapped. "You cannot silence art, Molly, especially art performed through my nose." he protested. She ignored him and synchronized their watches, phones, timers, kitchen clock, and one borrowed sundial. "At twelve fifteen, lights flicker, music stops, and we move fast." she explained. "At twelve sixteen, we vanish like birthday candles after loud singing." Bill added. Molly loaded the fake cake while Bill practiced smiling beneath greasepaint, glitter, sequins, and theatrical confidence. "Let's steal Christmas in June, partner in crime." Molly asked him quietly.
