Molly crouched beside the dented van watching balloons bobbing above the fence while Bill checked his watch and pretended not to notice the glitter everywhere. “I have counted seventeen presents inside that hall already and every single one is wrapped better than anything we have ever stolen in our lives.” Bill frowned at the bouncy castle blocking the side gate and wondered aloud whether clowns counted legally as security guards or just unusually cheerful witnesses. “If those clowns are security then I am deeply worried because one just traded his badge for a balloon animal and two jelly beans earlier.” Molly opened her notebook and drew the garden the hall the tables and one suspicious grandmother who had not blinked for nearly twenty minutes straight. “That grandmother is either asleep with her eyes open or she is running surveillance for the birthday boy and honestly both options terrify me completely.” Bill pulled a crumpled party hat from his pocket and placed it solemnly upon his head like a general preparing troops for an absurd war. “This hat is my disguise and frankly it is flawless because nobody questions a man wearing elastic under his chin at a party for children.” Molly stared at him then at the enormous cake being carried through the front doors by four adults sweating like bank robbers moving a safe. “Forget the presents for one second because that cake clearly requires insurance paperwork and possibly a forklift and I refuse to die underneath buttercream frosting.” Bill nodded gravely and wrote cake hazard in huge letters across the plan before underlining it twice and adding a small skull for dramatic emphasis. “Noted and furthermore we enter during musical chairs when everyone is distracted by betrayal competition and the savage politics of finding somewhere to sit down.” Molly tapped the map where the present table stood beside the buffet guarded only by paper plates sausage rolls and one very sleepy looking uncle. “We grab the biggest boxes first because big boxes mean big toys and big toys mean we finally pay rent without selling your beloved accordion.” Bill clutched his chest as if the accordion comment had wounded him then recovered quickly when Molly mentioned batteries were probably included with most toys. “My accordion has sentimental value and also monetary value if the pawn shop owner ever develops hearing problems or a sudden passion for terrible music.” Outside the hall children screamed with joy at a magician whose rabbit had escaped and was now eating confetti beneath the present table quite happily. “Perfect because while they chase that rabbit we slip inside wearing these waiter jackets and carrying empty trays like extremely suspicious caterers nobody actually hired.” Bill zipped his jacket hid the party hat beneath it and grinned as Molly started the van engine ready for their most ridiculous heist yet. “It is agreed we strike at noon we grab everything shiny and we absolutely do not stop for cake no matter how loudly it calls.”
