"We strike at noon when the cake arrives and every adult turns toward the frosting like moths toward a delicious lamp." Molly announced, unfolding a map drawn in crayon. "I love noon. Noon is sneaky. Morning expects trouble, afternoon expects naps, but noon expects sandwiches and nobody suspects sandwiches." Bill whispered, balancing a teapot on his head for disguise practice. "We wear clown costumes, carry balloons, and blend perfectly until the presents vanish into my enormous polka dot trousers." She pointed proudly at trousers large enough to hide a pony. "Last time you hid a pony, it sneezed confetti and the mayor chased us through three weddings and a dentist convention." Bill shuddered at the memory. The map showed the garden, the bouncy castle, six guard toddlers, and a suspicious grandmother armed with a wooden spoon. "Grandma Rosa is the real security system. She hears wrapping paper crinkle from four streets away during a thunderstorm." Molly tapped the map twice. "Then we distract her with bingo, knitting gossip, and a handsome accordion player named Trevor who owes me a favor." He wrote Trevor beside a drawing of impending doom. Down the hall, their cat Inspector Buttons slept inside the empty loot bag, dreaming presumably of felony and tuna. "Phase one, we enter singing happy birthday loudly and wrongly so nobody asks questions or requests actual musical talent." She cleared her throat dramatically. "Phase two, I juggle rubber chickens while you locate the present table beneath its mountain of glitter and ambition." Bill mimed juggling invisible chickens. "Phase three, we swap every gift box with identical boxes filled with socks, homework, and mildly disappointing fruit." Molly revealed forty empty boxes stacked like a cardboard fortress. "The children open socks, the parents applaud our honesty, and we escape wealthy in toys nobody can legally prove existed." He grinned with magnificent criminal confidence. Outside, thunder applauded politely, which Bill interpreted as destiny and Molly interpreted as weather requiring smaller umbrellas. "If the birthday boy cries, we panic, offer him a kazoo, and declare ourselves official emergency entertainment wizards." She produced a kazoo from nowhere respectable. "I packed three kazoos, two fake moustaches, and one accordion player snack in case Trevor gets nervous before showtime." Bill opened his backpack reverently. "At noon tomorrow, we become legends, unless Rosa spots us first and adopts us against our will." Bill saluted solemnly, tripped over Inspector Buttons, landed softly inside the loot bag, and decided destiny smelled faintly of tuna, crayon, birthday cake, and approaching grandmotherly justice. They laughed, packed everything twice, and waited eagerly for sneaky noon.
