Tonight the rain hammered the van roof while Molly spread a crayon map across the dashboard and Bill ate peanuts with the concentration of a bomb technician studying fragile wires. Molly whispered, "We go in through the kitchen when the clown arrives." She tapped the kitchen door twice, leaving purple glitter on the paper from her earlier attempt at innocence. Bill frowned at the green costume bag between his knees. "And I wear the dinosaur costume again?" Bill asked. Molly nodded without hesitation. "Yes, because inflatable dinosaurs are practically invisible." Outside, thunder bullied the suburbs, and a plastic flamingo toppled into a puddle like a witness choosing surrender over testimony. He groaned. "Last time I knocked over a punch bowl and three grandmothers." Molly grinned and folded the map into a paper swan because criminals should maintain hobbies that confused detectives and jurors. She added, "Which created a perfect diversion while I took the pinata gold." Bill stared at her. "Those were chocolate coins, Molly." Molly pointed one finger at him. "Expensive chocolate, Bill. Focus." The van smelled of rain, peanut dust, and strawberry ghosts from a juice box Bill had crushed during rehearsal behind the abandoned party warehouse downtown. He pulled a notebook from his jacket. "Fine. What is the target exactly?" Molly counted on her fingers, then ran out and used his. "Twenty presents, maybe thirty, all wrapped, all stacked beside the cake table." Across the street, balloons bobbed in a bright window where music, screaming, and childhood anarchy spilled happily into the wet evening air beyond the glass. Bill peered over the dashboard. "And the birthday kid?" Molly answered as if reading a police file. "Twins. Leo and Lena, age seven, ruthless negotiators." Bill swallowed hard and checked his pockets for courage, mints, lock picks, allergy medicine, and one tiny screwdriver he trusted. He muttered, "Seven year olds scare me more than guard dogs." She slid him a juice box in solemn tribute. "Good instinct. One of them bit a magician." It was grape, his favorite, which in their partnership counted as emotional support during any balloon related emergency. He took a long sip before asking, "What if they ask why Santa has a getaway driver?" Molly did not blink. "Then you say Santa outsourced logistics after the reindeer union meeting." Bill considered this with the expression he reserved for tax forms, escape routes, and suspicious clowns near windows. "That actually sounds responsible." Bill said at last. Molly shrugged cheerfully. "Exactly. Kids respect paperwork." He wrote that down twice carefully and drew a small crown beside it for emphasis. Bill glanced houseward, hopeful. "Do we take the cake too?" Molly shook her head. "Never the cake. That is how legends become villains." Through the windshield, the cake glowed under kitchen lights, magnificent, frosted, and utterly forbidden forever. Bill grinned, grabbing the costume. "Presents only, dignity optional?" Then Molly started the van, Bill squeezed into inflatable green glory, and together they rolled toward balloons, presents, chaos, and destiny.
