The abandoned toy factory smelled of dust, mildew, and forgotten birthday cake. Molly spread a crayon map across a wobbly table while Bill polished his smallest crowbar. "We strike at noon tomorrow, right when the clown starts juggling and every parent looks away," Molly whispered. "Noon feels dangerously early for crime, Molly, because I normally require a nap and three emotional support donuts first," Bill said. "Your nap can wait, because those presents will vanish into minivans by two unless we bravely intervene first," Molly replied. "Bravely intervene is a lovely phrase for stealing a scooter from a child wearing a paper crown," Bill said. "We are not stealing from children, Bill, we are redistributing joy toward two adults with excellent taste," Molly said. "My taste currently includes running shoes, because those parents looked extremely fit at the school rehearsal yesterday," Bill muttered. "That is why you will wear the inflatable dinosaur costume and create a magnificent distraction near the cupcakes," Molly explained. "Last time I wore that costume, I got stuck in a revolving door and married a coat rack," Bill protested. "The coat rack filed for divorce, so technically you are single, inflatable, and perfect for this glorious job," Molly said. "What exactly does a dinosaur do at a party besides panic toddlers and destroy the chocolate fountain?" Bill asked. "You dance, you roar politely, you fall into the bouncy castle, and everyone films instead of guarding presents," Molly said. "Meanwhile, you sneak through the kitchen carrying gift bags and pretending to be an extremely judgmental caterer?" Bill asked. "Exactly, and I shall criticize every sandwich while loading remote cars, dolls, drones, and glittery science kits outside," Molly replied. "What about the birthday girl, who guarded her presents yesterday like a tiny dragon wearing sparkly armor?" Bill whispered. Molly folded the map into a paper swan, mostly because the original instructions had become completely unreadable. Bill examined the dinosaur costume, which wheezed sadly whenever he squeezed its enormous purple tail. Outside, rain tapped the cracked windows like impatient fingers demanding cake, answers, and better criminals. "Poppy only guards presents until cake appears, then she abandons duty for frosting like every professional among us," Molly said. "Suppose the clown recognizes me from clown college, where I failed balloon animals and advanced honking twice?" Bill asked. "He will be busy juggling chainsaws, rubber chickens, and his questionable life choices, so relax and roar beautifully," Molly answered. "And if parents chase us through the sprinklers while shouting about stolen trains and missing puzzle boxes?" Bill asked. "Then we release the dinosaur balloons, vanish behind the hedge maze, and meet beside the getaway ice cream truck," Molly declared. "Perfect, because nothing says master criminals like escaping sprinklers inside an ice cream truck playing cheerful music," Bill laughed. Molly tucked the swan into her jacket, Bill zipped the costume halfway, and together they rehearsed one final roar before the factory lights flickered, failed, and left them grinning proudly in the ridiculous darkness together.
