Molly and Bill huddled in the dimly lit corridor, peering through the crack of the door. The sounds of laughter, music, and excited chatter from the children's party ricocheted off the walls. Molly chewed on her lower lip, glancing at the treasure trove on the other side, a sea of ribbons, bows, and glimmering wrapping paper. "Okay, so the plan," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We nab the presents, hit the kitchen for the grub, and hit the exit." Bill nodded, adjusting his Santa hat to conceal his tousled hair. "Ho, ho, ho." He cleared his throat, a nervous habit. "What if we get caught in the act?" "By the parents? A well-timed 'Merry Christmas' and you'll be their new holiday hero with the prettiest assist of all." She offered a forced, jolly laugh. "Don't forget our backups." Her eyes darted to the pair of chloroform-soaked rags they'd prepared, somewhat guiltily, for the unsuspecting parents. In the distance, they heard a baby's shrill scream. "Just Bill, make sure you snag the bicycle," Molly said, pointing to a large box wrapped with green and red paper. "It's about as valuable as this place gets." She flicked a small block of stolen jewels in her pocket, and winked. Bill's eyes widened, realizing Molly's split was already set. "You always knew what you wanted in this game, you Smiler," Bill remarked with a wry grin. "Just wish they'd invite you to more parties with all this type of loot." Molly elbowed him gingerly. "It's not about the money for me, but I'll take it. It's about playing the part and bringing some extra magic to these kids." Her eyes misted, briefly, a memory glinting behind them. The birthday song drowned out the cacophony, signaling the cake. Bill stood, a determined twinkle in his eyes. "On three?" Molly nodded, and on "three," they burst through the doors, wearing gleaming grins and ready to celebrate in their own, crooked way.
