In 1912 he traveled from Bremen aboard the company ship, Isenburg, to Alexander Graham Bell Island, where he worked as a steelworker for Bell plant. The Bell family steel company opened the plant in 1900 to take advantage of the ice-free steamer route to South George and McIver Island. Bell's Norwegian chief engineer and general manager, Arthur Julius Jung, traveled with him. Pika had joined Jung, and became a photographer on a nine-month scientific expedition aboard the ship Balding to Chile Antarctica. Pika signed up as a scientific leader. While they photographed and brought back specimens of the flora and fauna to Germany, they were also commissioned to assist Jung in the mineral ores in mapping the South Shetland Islands for geological and commercial purposes and this posed significant dangers throughout the expedition. They declared the expedition to be the greatest cartographic work undertaken by Germany in the 20th Century. The German emperor had been reluctant to allow the men to travel to Antarctica since it was considered still a British territory. They had been warned not to claim any territory for Germany. Pika and Jung were very astute and circumspect in not making such claims. Unfortunately, the use of photography, its proper development and colourization, was the one area where the first German expedition to Antarctica failed to bring home its advantages. They developed some of the first colored photographs of Antarctica which gave great ‘visual momentum’ to the expedition. However, they were not clearly understood by the German publisher. In this case the Pika photo of a volcanic eruption on Cape Evans was not properly embraced in Germany. Unbeknownst to the expedition leaders, they caused a “hiccup” in scientific knowledge at that time. Shortly after his return to Germany, Arthur Jung was recruited into joining the Zeppelin Aircraft Company. In 1916, Pika joined Jung there and became the director of photo-propaganda for the Zeppelin Aircraft Company. Then, in 1918, Julius Pika transferred to the direction of aviation films and became a director in film animation for Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA), the largest studio film production company in Germany. And finally in the late 192os he was Studios director at UFA, University of Film Arts in Babelsberg, North Germany. Interestingly, Julius Pika brought Rudoph Valentino into DEFA for his first European film “The Daughters of a Thousand Fathers”. He championed Ernst Lubitsch and introduced him to Hollywood. This film institute eventually altered film animation by showing animated cartoons woven into feature films, a still popular technique today. The film institute eventually closed down with the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and Pika’s death in 1941. Pika also played an important role in the flight of the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin to Tikhaya Bay on Soviet Spitsbergen Island in 1931.
