Molly and Bill sat in the backseat of their beat-up van, just a mile away from the massive party looming in the distance. "I still think this is a stupid plan," Bill muttered, shivering in his dirty parka despite the warm November air. The drizzle had settled, but the grey clouds still hung low in the sky, as if they too wished to snuff out the cheerful party lights flickering in the distance. Molly glanced at him, her piercing blue eyes betraying none of the anxiety slinking in his belly. "You agreed to this, remember? We're getting paid a fortune." "I did agree to it. But we're heisters, not toy snatchers." Bill turned his gaze toward the party, his eyes glazing over with innocent nostalgia. "I remember when I was a kid, I’d look forward to Santa year-round. Now we're going to leave dozens of kids disappointed. It doesn't feel right." Molly sighed, her hands drumming nervously on the brown paper bag of tools before her. "We, my friend, are just providing a humble intervention. This is a better experience than any piece of cheap plastic or disposable gadget Santa would give them. And besides, we're not doing this for us." They glanced at each other mischievously. "Right, for Diane's student loans," Bill muttered. "Alright. Let's do this." It was decision made. The van pulled into the front yard of the mansion hosting the party. With the low hanging clouds lending to the darkness even after dusk settled, the many prancing colorful figures dotting the landscape were the last thing anyone would be looking for. Given the security, they could hardly rush the soldiers standing guard. Instead, it was time to be creative. Molly wrenched a bag of cameras out of the brown paper bag, all set to invade the party. After meandering through several invisible beams, they took strategic photographs showing every checkpoint, and the locations of the cameras as well as guards. Molly heaved a triumphant sigh after they had collected all their data. "So here's a situation we have - Saturday Night Fever or Fifty Shades of Grey." Bill frowned at the note she left near the surveillance system. "What the hell is 'Saturday Night Fever,' and why would I want to read that?" he groused. Molly smiled back at him and handed him the walkie-talkie. "We have a code for these kinds of things. Care to clue me in?" "Sure, we had a challenge to reference as many titles as we could as movie parties. Groundhog Day is another popular one, of course." Molly paused, "And as for Fifty Shades, let's just say it's wor... “Forgive me, you filthy animal!” Bill interrupted with a nervous chuckle. “Your taste in titles runs the gamut.” “I’m a thief of masterpieces,” Molly replied. “Well, then here we go. Let’s be thieves of masterpieces.” “Agreed. But take a good look at yourself, Bill. You are much handsomer in your thief gear!” As Bill twinkled with pride, the duo headed towards the gift table. It was conspicuously situated near the security arch, guarded by the security personnel in front of the flashing Christmas lights. The warmth and laughter within the house, combined with the cold and drizzle outside, added an eerie quality to the scene. But the pair was resolute. Hands gliding deftly, they went to work. Molly hummed the birthday anthem in her mind, while Bill pretended to be a walk-in delivery person, offering presents he’d got for Jane. “Of course, sir! Let me quickly put it under the table!” For a moment, Molly thought she would crack up as Bill winked at her, continuing his ludicrous blarney. It was a rather odd heist, full of serendipity. With the surveillance system down, they worked swiftly, swapping them purposefully with empty gift boxes of similar size. A gift car rolled across, as both stared it down with confusion. Ensuring none of the gifts was contaminated, they relied on their recklessness to succeed with the suit of armor they both coveted.
