The doorbell rang, startling Molly and Bill as they peered out from the bushes at the brightly decorated house. Children's laughter drifted out into the evening air. "What the hell was that?" Bill hissed, ducking down further behind a hydrangea bush. "Tell me you didn't ring the goddamn doorbell, you dolt." "Me? No way! I know you're the one who pushed it," Molly whispered fiercely. "I'm not getting blamed for your stupidity this time." Bill snorted. "If you hadn't insisted we wear these stupid masks, we wouldn't have to worry about fingerprints!" Molly rolled her eyes dramatically above the fuzzy bunny headpiece. "Oh, I'm sorry, but did you want to go in there starkers and give the kiddies a show? I'm sure they'd love that!" Bill muttered a string of curses under his breath before glancing up at the house again. "Well, what's our next move then, genius? We can't exactly stroll on in now with the parents waiting for us at the front door." Molly tapped a furry finger against her chin, pretending to ponder deeply. "Hmm, I don't know, maybe we should just forget the whole thing and go home empty-handed like you wanted to in the first place!" "I did not say that!" Bill sputtered indignantly. "I just thought-" The door opened again, cutting him off. "Hello? Is anyone there?" Molly froze, her heart pounding wildly beneath the fluffy costume. Slowly, she raised a trembling hand and gave Bill a shove. He stumbled forward with an undignified yelp, crashing face-first into the bushes. "Oof! What the f-" "You're on!" Molly stage whispered gleefully as she grabbed a fistful of Bill's shirt and dragged him along with her towards the house. Bill sputtered and flailed helplessly as Molly hauled him out into the open. She marched right up to the front door and plastered on the widest, fakest grin imaginable. The mask made her voice sound even more grating than usual. "Why hello there! So sorry to be late!" Molly chirped to the bewildered-looking mother standing there. "I hope we haven't kept you waiting too long! My husband and I were just so excited to get here, weren't we sweetie?"
